One-Day Teachers' Training Workshop “Dedication and zeal among teachers can bring revolution in the educational sector.” Mr. Ghulam Mohiuddin, Incharge Magazine Section, The Daily Jung Mr. Ghulam Mohiuddin, Incharge Magazine Section, The Daily Jung and the Chief Guest of the event, expressed thus while addressing at the Certificate Distribution Ceremony on the occasion of a one-day Teachers’ Training Workshop held at CIBES (Commecs Institute of Business and Emerging Sciences) on Saturday, February 14, 2009. On that occasion Mr. Asadullah Khan, Trustee, Commecs Educational Trust was the Guest of Honour. Both the Guests highly appreciated CIBES’ public service initiative to the cause of education. They stressed the need of enhancing Teachers’ skills for a better development and growth of the students. The workshop was organized as part of CIBES’s public service initiative with the aim to provide sound training to the school Teachers (Matric and O’ Levels) from the renowned schools of Karachi. The topic of the Workshop was ‘How to Teach Urdu’. The Principal CIBES Cdr. (Retd.) Abdul Razaq PN presented his welcome address to the participants and gave a comprehensive briefing on the achievements of CIBES over the years. The workshop consisted of three modules which were presented by Mr. Muhammad Muzaffar, Asst. Professor, Ms. Sadia Farhad Qudusi, former Vice Principal, CIBES and Mr. Uzma Naveed, lecturer Urdu, respectively. The participants appreciated CIBES efforts in arranging such programmes and expressed their hope for the same. College shields were presented to the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour by the Executive Director Commecs Educational Trust (CET), Mr. Muhammad Arif Dossal and the Principal CIBES, Cdr. (Retd.) Abdul Razaq PN at the end of the programme. One- Day Workshop for School Principals (Matric / O’ Levels) at COMMECS COMMECS Institute of Business and Emerging Sciences organized a one-day principals’ workshop on Saturday November 22, 2008. The programme was exclusively designed for the heads of the institutions with an objective- Education with a Different Perspective. The one-day workshop was divided into two modules. Module I was Faculty Retention- an Investment or an Expense while Module II was Encouraging Teachers to Add Ethical Values to the syllabi. The presenters of the Module I were Mrs. Zehra Abbas, Principal Stanmore School, Ms. Rehana Saghir Faridi, Principal Happy Palace School F.B. Area, Ms. Nargis Alvi, Principal Habib Girls School, Mr. Mehmood-Uz- Zaman Khan, Director and Administrator, Haq Foundation School and Mr. Sohail Farooqui, Assistant Vice Principal CIBES. The speakers of Module II were Mr. Shujauddin Sheikh, Academic Director, Quran Academy and Mr. Muhammed Ishaq, Islamic Scholar. The presentations will help the management and the heads of the institutions in creating a congenial environment and building their team building skills. It has assisted the participants in learning how to create appropriate leadership, team cohesion, providing training, developing trust, rewarding the team and retaining them as assets for the organizations. It has also enlightened the participants that syllabi of every subject can add ethical references from Quran and Hadiths, which is a value addition in educating the youth today. Certificates were presented to the speakers and the participants. Inter Class Quiz Competition 2008 Global Knowledge empowering youth today: Haider Ali Novein, Secretary Board of Intermediate Education Karachi Inter-class quiz competition was held at Commecs Institute of Business and Emerging Sciences on October 25, 2008. The competition had two sessions. Session one was among the students of first year and during the session two, second year students had their contest. Dr. Prof. Jamil Hasan Kazmi, Chairman Geography Department, University of Karachi was the Chief Guest of the first part and Mr. Zahid Mazhar Senior News Producer GEO TV, was the Guest of Honour. Mr. Haider Ali Novein, Secretary Board of Intermediate Education Karachi and Mr. Tahir Siddiqi, Chief Staff Reporter Daily Dawn, attended the second session as the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively. “General knowledge and skills learnt broaden the horizon of the learning process of students” said Dr. Professor Jamil Hasan Kazmi. The intelligence and spontaneity of the participating students was highly appreciated. During the contest students were tested from the fields of General knowledge, Pakistan studies, Religion, Current affairs, Spellings and Visuals of celebrities and famous buildings. After a tough competition the succeeding contestants among the first year students were from OHK class which grabbed the first prize. Toyota class got the second prize and Vohra class was awarded the third prize. The results of the second session announced Gatron class as first, Kaiser class won the second prize and UDL class bagged the third prize. College shields were presented to the Chief Guests and Guests of Honour by the Acting Principal CIBES Mr. Sohail Farooqi. Foundation Day CelebrationSeptember 15, 2008 “The role of teachers and parents is commendable for the success of students.” Ms. Tauqir Fatima Bhutto, Minister for Women Development Govt. of Sindh, expressed thus while addressing the faculty and students of Commecs Institute of Business and Emerging Sciences (CIBES) as the Chief Guest on the 15th Foundation Day Ceremony held on September 15, 2008 at CIBES campus. She also lauded the efforts of the students to get themselves recognized not only in academics but also in co-curricular activities. She appreciated the efforts of Commecs Institute for the cause of education and its commitment to excellence. Expressing Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s vision of the Pakistani nation, she said that it should be our priority to be known in the world for our abilities in the fields of our interest. Having visited the campus, she expressed her high hopes for the brilliant future of Commecs. She further added that Commecs could rightly be placed among the leading institutions of the country. The Principal CIBES Cdr (Retd.) welcomed the participants and thanked the Chief Guest and the esteemed Guests of Honour for gracing the occasion. He outlined the success records of the institute, lauded the endeavour of the think tank of CIBES and commended the unmatched contribution of the faculty and students. The Guest of Honour Mr. Arshad slam, President Commecs Old Students’ Association, shared his views about the success of students in general and our success as a nation in particular. While expressing the importance of being a Muslim nation, he said that Pakistan is our identity and we should not forget this. Mr. Syed Ali Hasan Naqvi, Assitant General Manager Marketing Daily Dawn, said that the country needed institutions like Commecs to develop the leadership of tomorrow. He met the faculty members of CIBES and expressed his appreciation for the record of achievement of students who had gained major positions in the Board Examination continuously for the last 15 years. The ceremony comprised speeches, songs and a skit by the students of the institute. Members of CIBES Alumni were also invited to share their experiences. The Foundation Ceremony was followed by the Award Distributing Ceremony in honour of the CIBES’ 1st position holder Mr. Zeeshan Jaffer and other A-1 graders of Pre-Engineering Science Group in the Board of Intermediate Examination 2007-08. The Chief Guest Ms. Tauqir Fatima Bhutto presented the Gold Medal to Zeeshan Jaffer on behalf of the Commecs Old Students’ Association. Ms. Shaheena Mehboob, convener programme committee, presented the vote of thanks to the participants and guests in the end of the programme.

Dedication and zeal among teachers can bring revolution in the educational sector Dr. Neelofar Halai, Associate Prof. AKU-IED Dr. Neelofar Halai, an Associate Prof. at Aga Khan University, Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) appreciated CIBES’s public service initiative to the cause of education. While addressing at the Certificate Distribution Ceremony on a one-day teacher’s training workshop held on April 12, 2008 organized for the school teachers( Matric and O’Levels) from Govt. and private sectors, she stressed on the need of professional enhancement of in-service teachers who can add value and quality to their teaching standards of their respective schools and organizations. The Guest of Honor, Mr. S. M. Fazal, Editor Daily NEWS, highlighted the importance and pivotal role of teachers in the sound development of their students. He added that the teachers should inculcate honesty and ethical values and mould the students in the right direction. The workshop consisted of two modules: Module 1 Emotional Intelligence conducted by Prof. M. Yousuf Khan, Program Director, BBA Program Module 2 Effective Teaching of Theorems by Prof. Athar Afridi The workshop was attended by forty participants from thirty different schools of the city. The Principal CIBES Cdr (Retd) Abdul Razaq PN presented his welcome address and briefed the participants about CIBES achievements over the years. The participants appreciated CIBES efforts in arranging such programmes. The Chief Guest Dr. Neelofar Halai and the Guest of Honour Mr. S. M. Pakistan Day ProgrammeThe launching Ceremony of Payam-e- CIBESunday March 23, 2008Pakistan Day Programme and The Launching Ceremony of the fourteenth issue of the college magazine was held on Sunday March 23, 2008. The Chief Guest Mr Qazi Arif Additional Secretary, Training and Education, Govt. of Sindh, did not attend the programme due to personal reasons. However, The Guests of Honour Mr Khwaja Bakhtiar Ahmed, Director Finance and Company Secretary, Wyeth Pakistan Limited and Mr. Najeeb Ahmed, Senior Staff Reporter, Jang, arrived on time and attended Pakistan Day celebrations and the Launching Ceremony of Bilingual College magazine Payam-e- CIBE. Through national songs , speeches and skit the youth renewed their pledge for their continuous struggle for the progress and prosperity of their homeland. The thought provoking words of Muhammed Ali Mooni and Hassaan Bin Shaheen urged everyone upon action and stirred every heart to its core. The skit “Tajdeed-e- ahad-e-wafa” written and presented by Ms Atiqa Anjum, stressed upon the role of parents and elders for instilling high moral principles for a healthy and worthy life for their sons and daughters. Interviews of the members of English and Urdu Editorial were held and the members shared their year-long experiences with the audience. Amidst great applause and jubilation the Guests of Honour, Mr Khwaja Bakhtiar Ahmed Mr. Najeeb Ahmed, Mr. Arshad Islam, Mr. M. Arif Dossal, Cdr. (Retd.) Abdul Razaq, Prof. Dr. Qadeer A.Saleem and all the membersof the editorial Boards launched the fourteenth issue of bilingual college magazine Payam-e-CIBE. Later, members editorial boards of Payam-e-CIBE and Commecs Post received certificates for their efforts. In their addresses, Mr Khwaja Bakhtiar Ahmed Mr. Najeeb Ahmed, highlighted the important role which youth could play for the development of their motherland. Students' Week at CIBESFebruary 21 - 23, 2008Education is the weapon by which we can win over the entire world: Mr. Riaz Memon Additional Secretary, Education. Student’s Week was celebrated at CIBES from 21st to 23rd Feb, 2008. The programme commenced with Inter-Class Bi-lingual Declamation Contest. Mr. Yousuf Ali Khan graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Mr. Sabih-ud-din Ghausi Senior News Consultant Dawn News, and Mr. Jawed Akhai, CEO of Martin Dow Pharmaceutical Company were the Guests of Honour. On the same day an English Play “The Dear Departed” by Stanley Houghton was staged by the students. It was a light comedy revolving around the theme of greed and lust. Ms. Zeba Bakhtiar a famous Film and TV artist was the chief guest. She praised the talents of the students and declared Aimen Tariq, Hassan bin Shaheen and Semra Ayub as best performers. Qirat and Naat Competition was held on the second day of the Students’ Week. Mr. Ejaz Rehmnani , famous poet and religious scholar was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Mr. Hamid Rabani Okarvi and Mr. Aadil Farooq were the Guests of Honour. Renowned Naat Khawan and Qaries were invited as Judges. The Chief Guest applauded the performances of the students and announced the winners of the Qirat and Naat Khawani Contests. He also appreciated the endeavor of the institution for arranging such events. Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony was held on the final day of the Students’ Week. An Urdu Play “Sach Much” by Riaz ul Haq Siddiqui was staged by the students in the first session. Famous TV producer Mr.Qasim Jalali was the Chief Guest and Ms. Samina Sikandar Vice President Commecs Old Students Association was the Guest of Honour. The second half of the programme was the Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony. Students were awarded shields certificates and trophies on their accomplishments in academic, co-curricular and extra curricular activities. Mr. Riaz Ahmed Memon Additional Secretary Education honoured the event as the Chief Guest. He congratulated CIBES efforts in strengthening the roots of the nation by imparting quality education. Mr. Ahmed Chinoy Trustee CET, and Mr. Mohsin Jaffri Editor Business and Finance Review, The News, were the Guests of Honour. They appreciated the discipline of CIBES and hard work of the faculty and administration. Members of the CIBES Managing Committee Mr. Iqbal Umer and Mr. Peer Muhammad Diwan were also present on the occasion. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Mrs. Shaheena Mehboob Convener Programmes Committee. Battle of Wits Battle of Nerves Inter- Collegiate Bilingual Declamation Contest CIBES, since its inception, has been organizing Inter- Collegiate Debates and Declamation contests in order to provide a forum for public speaking with logic, skill and competence for the present day youth. Each year the occasion is marked by passion and immense involvement by young speakers who try to prove their mettle in the art of public speaking. Invitations were extended to the leading colleges and institutes and by the grace of God the Programme Committee witnessed a positive response as more than twenty colleges and institutes nominated / registered their speakers for the contest Prof. Anwar Ahmed Zai, Chairman , Board of Intermediate Education , Karachi (BIEK) graced the occasion with his presence as the Chief Guest. To assess and evaluate the speeches in Urdu and English languages, separate panel of judges were invited. For the English panel the judges were: Mr. Hamid Ali Maroof, Senior Executive Maxim Advertising, Mr. Osama Bin Javed, Editor DAWN NEWS and Mr. Ali Khan Mangi, Professor of English, CIBES For the Urdu panel the judges were: Dr. Tanzim ul Firdous and Ms. Saima Naz of Urdu Dept. University of Karachi and Babbar Ali Naqvi , professor of Urdu, CIBES The speakers displayed their awareness, involvement and maturity while speaking on serious and humorous topics in both the languages The serious topics in English were: 1. Success and failure are predestined. 2. One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter 3. Our present generation has no future. 4. All literature is merely an entertainment now! The Humorous topics(English) were 1. Marriage is a lottery in which the husband always loses. 2. Commercials are the best part of TV. 3. When teenage is in, wisdom is out. 4. Flattery is the ladder to success The serious topics in Urdu were: 1. Naya hai Daur purane chiragh gul kar do. 2. Mat jala is ghar ko ke ye ghar tera bhi hai aur mera bhi. 3. Maghrabi saqafat ki yalghar, zimedar kaun. 4. Bol ke lab azad hain tere The Humorous topics (Urdu)were 1 Bacche hamare ahad ke chalak ho gai. 2 Abhi Ishq ke imtehan aur bhi hain. 3 Tum hi kaho ye andaz e guftago kia hai 4 Hum hans deye hum chup rahe All the speakers vehemently put forward their arguments employing all the oratory skills in their speeches and making the task of the judges really formidable The winners of the Declamation Contest were: English 1st Position Delves James Trinity Girls’ College 2nd Position Khurram Memon Cadet College Sanghar 3rd Position Cadet Bilawal Baloch Baqai Cadet College Urdu 1st Position Kehkashan Kanwal Sir Syed Girls’ College 2nd Position Ijlal Mobin Bahria College NORE-1 3rd Position Bilal Asif Bahria College Karsaz Trophy went to D.A.Degree College for women Phase VIII for highest aggregate The Chief Guest ,Prof. Anwar Ahmed Zai complimented the efforts of CIBES for holding such programmes which are essential for the growth of students and which pave the way for their bright and successful future. This momentous occasion finally came to an end with a graceful Prize Distribution Ceremony followed by shield presentations to the Judges, Chief Guest and Guest of Honour. Principals’ Workshop A one day workshop for School Principals was arranged by the Public Service Initiative Committee on November 24, 2007. The programme started at 8:30 a.m. with the Qirat by Mr. Amir Hussain followed by Principal’s welcome address. First module on Quality Assurance in Education through Self Assessment was conducted by Mrs. Ambreen Asif Quershi. CIBES & CIFT presentations were given by Mrs. Shaheena Mehboob. Second Module was conducted by Mr. Salman Asif Siddiqui on Understanding School Culture: A Starting Point for Change.. Acknowledgement was received from 32 schools out of which 25 schools participated. No of participants were 37 in all. Chief Guest Mr. Anwar Ahmed Zai, Chairman, Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi, graced the occasion and distributed certificates to the participants. The vote of thanks was given by the programme organizer Mrs. Sayida Wahab. COMMECS Institute awarded charter for degree awarding status At a graceful ceremony, in which the former students of the Government College for Commerce and Economics and luminaries of the city were present, the COMMECS Institute of Business and Emerging Sciences expressed its gratitude to the Government of Sindh for authorizing it to conduct its own degree awarding programmes. The Chief Guest of the occasion Mr. Adil Sidiqui, Minister for Industries, Commerce, Transport, Labor and Co-operation appreciated the efforts of CIBES and expressed his happiness at this development. Present on the occasion were leading personalities of the city like Mr. Majyd Aziz–President – KCCI, Mr. Siraj Teli of the SITE Association Industries, Mrs. Samina R. Khan – Dy. Director – British Council, Mr. Iqbal Umer of the Cotton Exchange of Pakistan, Mr. Arshad Islam–Governor Lions, Mr. Feroze Qaiser – Former Finance Minister, Mr. Ahmed Chinoy – Assistant Chief CPLC, Mr. Irfan Nadeem – Former Managing Trustee of Commecs Educational Trust and Commissioner Income Tax, Mr. Qaiser Mufti – Former President of ICMAP and known industrialists Mr. Peer M. Diwan and Mr. Arif Habib, besides reputed academicians of the city. A welcome address was presented by the Managing Trustee, Mr. Omar H. Karim, who conveyed the Commecs Philosophy of bringing in a quantum change in the quality of education. The chief guest was appraised of the policies of admission and academic performance at the institute as well as the aspirations of the trustees, Managing Committee members and the faculty members of the Commecs Institute of Business and Emerging Sciences. Mr. Ahmed Chinoy, Asst. Chief – CPLC and others present also presented their views and thanked the chief guest for sparing time and extending support to CIBES. In his speech, the chief guest appreciated the positive contribution of the COMMECS Institute of Business and Emerging Sciences to the educational standards prevalent in the city. He specially remarked that the policies of meritorious admission, continuous academic development and the aura of discipline that the institution exuded was an example for everyone to follow. He said that he was happy to be associated with an institute which, in today’s scenarios takes such pains to ensure quality assurance in every aspect of knowledge delivery and professional management. He assured all present that he would continue to be available for any help or support that CIBES may require in the future, as well. At the close of the session the Chairman of the Academic Advisory Committee, Mr. Ahsan M. Saleem informed the chief guest and the guests that Commecs had taken up this task of providing quality education on a “not-for-profit” basis and was happy to inform that a large number of students were obtaining their education at a highly subsidized fee package since the motto of the institution was that no student shall be deprived of good education / admission due to his / her financial constraints. He closed the session by offering a vote of thanks to the Chief guest and all the guests who had assembled for this occasion.
